Smashin Fashion - love it/hate it

Today I was checking out the new Vogue and I am compelled to add my two cents worth. Here are the things that I am loving and hating right now in the world of fashion.

Loving is easier so let’s start with that. I love the new Ralph Lauren embellished brooches. These are so vintage looking and are absolutely gorgeous. Price – who knows – quite high I imagine. I love black tights. I love black leggings. Many don’t love the leggings; however, I am a fan. See, my leg situation is unique. I had stockings tattooed up the backs of both legs topped with little bows that stop where a garter would be. Super cute, however, not always appropriate for every day mom events. Please note though, the rule with leggings and I’ve said it before – cover your bottom and wear flats. I love the long black leather over the elbow black gloves from Bebe. These things are smoking hot. Maybe not practical, but lovely none the less. Finally I am in love with the new bags.

I love how the new bags are structured. With the rigid tops that remind me of my Hollywood grandma’s old clutches that snap like big coin purses to the soft unstructured bottoms these bags are fancy-schmancy. Some folks are using crocodile prominently this year. The Dior black croc is so pretty and I think Bottega Veneta is the designer with the new blue croc (sorry- a bit distracted today- having a tooth pulled at 2) which is extra luxurious with the general pattern of the croc skin larger – maybe they took it from a different place on the crocodiles body – perhaps it is a croc ass purse? I digress; finally, there is the new Ralph Lauren Ricky bag which is loud. Too shiny, too decorated with buckles, too much.

Two of my favorite bags this season come from one of the designers that I am completely suspect of. At the risk of being an opinionated goofball, I have issues with Miuccia Prada’s fashion sensibility. That is why I am so surprised I absolutely love the new pleated leather satchel from Prada. It is nice to see something so pretty from the woman who gave us slouchy over the knee stockings paired with patent leather sandals most recently. I was even more thrilled with the Mui Mui soft leather bag. It screams “look at me, look how pretty I am, don’t you wish I was on your shoulder”. Also am interested in taking a closer look at the Fendi Selleria, The Chloe Edith as well as another more casual bag in grey I saw from Chloe. Those Louis Vuitton suede stamped bags are pretty as is the fringe bag from Michael Kors (too hippyish for me but cute). I am always interested to check out Longchamps new bags and the Gucci geometric wine and black bag definitely deserves a closer look. Finally, I would be doing a disservice if I don’t take a minute to check out Kate Spade and Marc Jacobs new bags (as I loving glance at my Kate Spade black leather doctor’s bag with the red lining). Sigh.

Following are some of the things that are irritating my fashion sensibility. Guess ads – what the hell happened? When I was young I had to have the following jeans: Chemin de Fer, Luv Its, Dittos, and when I got into the tween years Guess. Those little zippers at the ankles were like wearing a fashion badge. I know I am older now but it seems to me that Guess is still pedaling the same stuff but sluttier. Perhaps it was all down hill post Paris Hilton ads. I may be becoming a prude but these ads make me cringe a little. Burberry riding hats are goofy. I am not a fan of the hat that sits sort of perched on your head. Think chicks in trucker hats. Think those big new oversized hats by Marc Jacobs that look like rolled ski caps, finally, think Burberry riding cap. I don’t get it and I don’t like it. Of course, full disclosure requires me to tell you that I am scared too death of horses. Regardless, of my own personal issues, I just think they make the wearer look silly. Ankle boots are back with a vengeance. My rockstar has been trying to get me to wear these boots forever. NO I say. I will not succumb. I recently realized why he is so hot for me to wear this type of shoe. I found an old photo with a picture of him wearing skinny jeans and white stiletto ankle boots. He just wants me to get them so he can borrow them. However, they hit at the wrong place for me with jeans. They hit at the wrong place for me with dresses and skirts. Sorry honey.

Finally, my last complaint. Why does every single Gucci model ever look lost? What exactly are they squinting into the distance looking for? A sandwich???
